リハビリテーション医学の講義を行った。リハビリテーションの言葉の由来について説明する際、以下の記事を利用した。
When explaining the decision to suspend the sentence, Judge Sugita noted that the prospect of rehabilitation was good for the fallen star because he had the support of Masato Matsuura, 44, president of Avex Group Holdings Inc., the record label that had grown rich on the earnings from Komuro's hits. Matsuura provided the 648 million yen--the defrauded sum plus arrears and compensation--that Komuro used to repay the investor.

After the verdict, Komuro held a tearful news conference where he apologized to supporters and fans.
"I have committed a grave, grave mistake," he said. "I have caused a long period of suffering for the victim. I have also betrayed many of my fans. I express my deep, deep apologies."
Komuro explained that he had been prepared to serve time in prison.
He thanked the court for providing an opportunity to rehabilitate himself. "I will have to make a comeback no matter what happens," Komuro said. "I want to achieve a comeback for those who have supported me as well as my fans, and I want to protect the pride of those people who love my music."(IHT/Asahi: May 12,2009)

Rehabilitationという言葉は、もともとはラテン語に由来し、re（再び）+ habilis（適した）+ ation（すること）、すなわち「再び適した状態になること」を意味する。中世ヨーロッパにおいては「教会からの破門の取り消され、復権すること」を指していた。このことから転じて、名誉回復、復権、更生などの意味を持つようになった。
Rehabilitationという言葉が医学で用いられるようになったのは、第一次世界大戦時、米国退役軍人病院に、Division of Physical Retraining and Rehabilitation という部門が設けられたのが最初である。この当時、rehabilitation は一人前の人間として社会に戻ること、職業復帰の意味合いが強かった。
日本では、rehabilitation ＝ 機能訓練、と受け取られがちだが、英語圏ではもともとの意味で使用されることが多い。ちなみに、rehabilitate oneself とは、「〜の名誉を回復する」という意味である。また、次のような場合にも、rehabilitationという言葉が使用される。
引用した記事で使用されたrehabilitation、および、rehabilitate himself という言葉は、当然のことながら、機能訓練の意味合いは全くない。それぞれ、更生、名誉の回復、という意味で用いられている。
Rehabilitation医学は、運動障害、高次脳機能障害等の障害を主な対象に、「全人的復権」を目指し総合的なアプローチに取組む医学として発展してきた。たとえ、治らなくてもあきらめない、しつこい医学である。
栄光と転落を味わった被告が、周囲の人の援助を受け、再生の道を歩み始める。それを裁判官が執行猶予という形の判決で支える。ここでは、rehabilitationという言葉が適切に使用されている。
